Phase 2, Post 8

In his presentation, Michael Lindsey dives into how different environmental factors can really affect and make a person. Many different influences that we experience growing up, shape us into who we are and oftentimes it is too hard to fight these values or truths that we’ve come to know especially when they can shape us negatively. I really appreciate the work and attention that Dr. Lindsey is giving to this given topic. Many children that grow up in poverty think that there is only one path they can truly take in life. Unfortunately many times parents are the ones that unknowingly make their children think these are their truths of life. This is why I think that it is important that in addition to helping children see they can break out of their stereotypes, he is also working towards helping parents help their children as well.

Many times sending letters to loved ones in prison can be very difficult and also costly over time. This is an issue that has been identified in the past but not much has been done to solve it. Uzoma Orchingwa and Gabriel Saruhashi identified this issue and realized they wanted to do something about it and so they created Ameelio. Ameelio allows families to communicate with their loved ones in prison at no cost. I was pretty curious about Ameelio and so I went on their site and was able to see what others had to say about it. One review that really popped out to me was one from a woman that is visually impaired. She mentioned that before she knew about the app, she was only really able to communicate via phone call but thanks to Ameelio, she is now able to send messages more often and with more ease. The other reviews were equally as positive. By digitizing the old method of sending cards they have allowed for more ease of communication to loved ones that are imprisoned.
