Phase 1, Post 2 (part 2): Medical Discrimination in Pop Culture

Updated: Feb 11, 2020

Have you ever watched The Good Doctor? It is a fictional show about a man, Shaun Murphy, who goes on to have successes despite being autistic. This show portrays Dr. Murphy’s life, giving us, the audience, glimpses into the childhood that help us understand why certain things may trigger him or cause certain reactions. In the first couple episodes, we see how the higher authorities of the hospital that Shaun wishes to work at refuse to give him a chance because of the fact that he is autistic. They are able to see time and time again that Shaun is able to do his job and although he still has much to learn, he proves that he is capable of being a good doctor. Although this show is fictional, it does analyze how different businesses of different occupations may refuse to hire or even give someone a chance simply because of their medical histories. This is something that we continue to hear about in the news more often than not. Even if someone is fully qualified for a position, they may get denied the opportunity because of a medical background they could not control.
